Arts workshops for Schools

The Asian remedies project intends to run a series of arts workshops for schools and community groups to encourage participants to explore and recall their traditions and practices. The feedback we receive from these meetings will contribute to the future shaping of the project. Details and results of the workshops will be posted here as they are scheduled and recorded.

Arts workshops for Primary Schools

The Remedies and Recipes project aims to explore concepts of health and well being among Asian communities base in the UK. One strand of this will be a series of arts workshops, to take place in primary schools, on Asian ideas about health and the body using artwork as a starting point.

ReOrientalisms
by Chila Burman
The workshops will be led by Chila Burman, the project’s artistic director. We will use images associated with Asian medicine, food and family life to stimulate and encourage the younger generation to express their own ideas and experiences. Their creative responses will help to build an art installation that will link up with the wider themes explored in the rest of the community, and form part of an exhibition associated with project’s Open Days.

Themes for exploration will include:

  • Asian ideas of the body
  • beauty, health and illness
  • my family
  • food – likes and dislikes
  • growing up
  • love and marriage
For all concerned this will a chance to appreciate what their own particular cultural heritage contributes to their own life and how it can contribute to that of the wider community.

Arts workshops for Secondary Schools

For Secondary School pupils part of the workshop programme will be to explore what it means to be of Asian extraction and living in the UK, and for the GCSE pupils involved, the workshops will be designed to contribute to their GCSE art course work.

Topics for discussion will include:

  • Asian ideas of the health and the body
  • beauty, bodies and self image
  • healthy living
  • dreams, ambitions and living up to expectations – East vs West?
  • love, marriage and sexual health
We will be co-ordinating with the Brooke Advisory Centre who run a sexual health counselling service for schools in South London
